CRICKET.
A NEW FAST BOWLER. London, Sept. 8. In the present dearth of first-class fast bowlers in England, the doings of Arthur Gilligan, captain of the Sussex team, are being watched with much interest. Many regard him as England’s hope for the future. He is the fastest bowler in England to-day, and on several occasions has skittled out opponents cheaply, his pace and pitch beating the very best batsmen. Gilligan, for Sussex, has taken 116 wickets at an average cost of 17| runs.—(A. and N.Z.)
GENTLEMEN v. PLAYERS. RHODES’ FEAT. London, Sept. 9. The cricket match, Gentlemen v. Players, was drawn. The former made 325 and 26 for six (declared), and Players 227 and 171 for one. Rhodes accomplished the dual feat of completing 1000 runs and 100 wickets for the season for the thirteenth time.—(A. and N.Z.)
