THE LIFTED ARM.
ENTERTAINiING PARLOR TRICK/ A curious phenomenon, which will mystify not only the' “victim,” but those who witness it, is described m “Nature.” The instructions are as follows:— With arms hanging relaxed, stand about 18 inches from the wall apd face the direction parallel to the wall. Stiffen the arm next the wall, and move it away from the body until the back of the hand comes into contact witli the wall. Stand, firm and press the wail as hard as possible for about 15 seconds. 1 hen relax the arm and step away from the wall. To the “victim’s” astonishment his arm will slowly rise, without his making any voluntary effort, until it reaches an approximately horizontal position. It will remain there for a few seconds and then sink to the side. The sensation is as if the arm is raised by an exterior force. Mr. T. Fra ham Brown, of the Physiology Institute. 1 Diversity College, Cardiff', relates that he first came across the phenomenon in 1917, when it was shown as a “parlour trick” in an officers’ mess in Macedonia. He was unable to trace its origin.
