DAVIS CUP.
THE PRELIMINARY TIES. PLAYING IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES. (Received 20, 10.50 a.m.) New York, March 18. The United States Lawn Tennis Association announced that it will suggest that preliminary Davis Cup matches be played in the various countries of Europe, pointing out that the primary object ol the Davis' Cup .tournament is to assist to spread interest in tennis throughout the world. It was at first thought it would involve a minimum ol expense if the first and second round matches were played in the United States, but it is now felt that the additional expenses would not bo justified. It is announced that the dates set for completion of Davis Cup matches are: First ties, by 24th June; second, by Islh July ; semi-finals, by 29th July; and final by Bth August. ABOLITION OF CHALLENGE SYSTEM. (Received 20, 9.20 a.m.) Paris, March 18. The congress of the International Lawn Tennis Federation adopted a resolution abolishing the system or challenge rounds in the world’s championship.—(Reuterj,
