TRANSVAAL COAL STRIKE. THOUSAND WHITES AND 20,000 NATIVES. PEACEFUL METHODS. (Received 4, 12.25 p.m.) Capetown, Jan. 3. The transvaal coal strike is in full swing. A thousand Europeans are out, affecting 20,000 natives. Pumpmen and other safety men remain at their posts. Half of their wages are going to the strikers’ fund. The strike committee advocate peaceful measures and obtained an order for the closing of bars in the area. The Government does not contemplate intervention at present nor will it attempt to force arbitration.—(A. and N.Z.) PUMPMEN WITHDRAWN.
(Received 4. 2.0 p.m.) Capetown, January 3. The central strike committee decided to withdraw the men previously permitted to continue pumping in the mines and working on public lighting services. The committee’s action is the result of alleged contravention of agreed conditions.—(United Service.)
