H.B. RUGBY UNION.

FINAL MEETING: The final meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union Management Committee for the past season was held last evening when Mr. J. W, Callaghan presided, and there were also present Messrs. A. J. Webber, Piki, N. McKenzie, R. Hardy, Alderman, King. Shell, a player who was suspended until he appeared before the union on a charge of too continuous appealing and bad language in a M. 8.0.8. y. Pirates junior grade match, made his appearance. He denied tlie using of bad language and said the referee was not giving the M. 8.0.8, team a fair run. They were even penalised when their captain appealed. They were all appealing in the first half and were warned not to. He appealed once or twice and was penalised, in the second half. Tlie player was suspended until and including May Bth. The chairman pointed' out that there was a proper course to take when refereeing was not considered satisfactory my players. A very lengthy letter from Mr. Janies McLeod, president of the New Zealand Rugby Union, was received. This dealt witli many matters arising from tlie recent South African tour, and in particular with the matter of the formation of the management committee of the New Zealand Union. He suggested that three Wellington men should be an executive and five more should be appointed from tlie unions direct, instead of all members of the committee being resident in Welling-

toil. Members generally agreed heartily with this suggestion and it was decided to advise Mr. McLeod in this direction. Arising from this matter it was decided to try and obtain some information concerning the French team which will be hero about next July. Dannevirke Sub-Union advised that Dannevirke South School and Napier Main had played at Waipukurau. The Napier School had declined to play the match for the Ross Shield, which had been handed over to Dannevirke South undefended. The ruling of the union was asked. The chairman said it was obvious that the local teachers were still antagonistic. Dannevirke had to get the shield. The secretary said the boys had been going down from Napier to play for the shield without arrangement by the teachers. The matter came before the teachers owing to the ground arrangements being unex-

pectedly changed. It was decided to declare Dannevirke South the winners, and to .later circularise teacher? with a view to getting aconference on the question of the rules for this shield. Mr. McKenzie said the teachers were not considering the boys at all. The boys wanted to play and the teachers were not looking, at the position from the boys’ point of view. The secretary said the boys were dead keen and lie had inadvertently “potted” them or they would have taken the Ross Shield match into their own hands. The Railway Department wrote denying a lack of first-class accommodation on the final test train. Any discourtesy on the part of the guard was denied. The meeting considered that the reply was not correct in its details, and it was decided to continue the correspondence. Southland expressed their appreciation of the treatment accorded them on their visit. Otago Union wrote in similar terms. a It was decided to donate £5 to tlile St. John Ambulance for services rendered during the past season. The secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union offered an apology for having sold one hundred seats for tho final South African test at Wellington. Tho sale was made at tho last moment when it looked probable that the special train would not run. Members considered that this gave the necessary clearance to tho local union and the explanation was accepted. A concert is to be arranged at which the prizes for the past year will bo presented. The union will provide supper. Saturday, Oct. 22nd. was fixed, provided the hall is available, and the function will be held at Scinde Hall., Clubs holding trophies are to hand them to the union immediately.
