PICTURE HOUSES.
MUNICIPAL. The picthrlsation of Ethel M. Doll’s famous novel, "The Rocks of Valpre,” was presented at the Hastings Municipal Theatre last evening, when a large number followed the screening with rapt attention, and were treated to a series of emotional scenes, plendid acting, beautiful scenery a nd a very acceptable story. Nothing is left undone, and each delicate subject is faithfully and carefully portrayed. The story concerns a French officer who has invented a new breech-block for a gun, 1 but while engaged in an afternoon tea party on the rocks with a young girl whom he succoured, a thief steals and sells his patent. That same evening the tide perforces the officer and the girl to stay all night on the rocks. When the officer tries to soil his patent to the War Office lie is arrested, court-martial-led and sentenced to years of imprisonment. A friend of his takes up his case, and is busily on it, when the officer escapes, and is taken on as secretary to his friend who has married the girl he fell in love with on the rocks. In the end tho officer’s honour is vindicated and tho ending is very beautifully portrayed, and very sad. A comedy and gazettes support. EVERYBODY’S. “The Notorious Miss Lisle,’ 1 fit Everybody’s Theatre, Hastings, presents the strikingly beautiful Katherine Macdonald in the title role. It is a mys- ! tcry play with a strong love theme running through it. Tho plot has to do with the net of circumstantial evidence woven round an innocent girl, the young and beautiful daughter of an army officer, and her efforts to find peace and love, though threatened everywhere with the finger of scorn. Tho supports arc made up in a comedy “The Simp,’’ the serial, “The Diamond Queen,’’ and gazette*.
