SPRING MEETING. N.Z. HORSES SHAPE WELL. Sydney, Oct. 4. The weather was ideal for the second day of the A.J.C. spring meeting. Over 80,000 were present—a record attendance. Thi course was in excellent condition. The New Zealand representatives. Star Ascendancy and Vespucci, were the first to justify the trip across the Tasman, although beaten by Erasmus. Pershore and Finmark commanded tremendous admiration in the Metropolitan, and justly so, Pershore receiving an ovation on weighing in. The Steeples provided an exciting tussle, particularly as Tararua Jack ran wide under the judge’s box, many thinking Taralie the winner. Results:— Shorts.—Elkin 1, Julian Grey 2, Elf acre 3. Won by a head. Time 1.13 J. Clibborn Stakes. —Erasmus 1, Vespucci 2, Tich 3. Vespucci was outpaced by Erasmus in the straight. Won by two lengths. Time

Metropolitan.—Pershore 1, Ecarte 2, Syce Knight 3. Pershore came away at the distance and wearing down Syce Knight won by one and a half lengths from Ecarte. Syce Knight was a neck away. Time 1.44}. RIFLE-SHOOTING. WAIPUKURAU DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB. There was a good muster of members of the above club for their opening day on Saturday last, October 2nd. at the Mount Vernon Range ,a teams match being the order of the day, President’s Team versus Dept.-President’s.
