HASTINGS BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING. The council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. G. Ebbett) in the chair. Also present: Crs. T. Donovan, L. Vi. Fowler, Janies O’Neill, A. W. Hamilton, C. J. Tipping, D. E. Davis, and T. Styles. ’ Leave of absence was granted to Crs. White and Be-amieh. CORRESPONDENCE.
The borough ranger (.Mr. Hall) asked for an increase in wages, and tfie borough foreman (Air. Sifunionds) asked to have his pay increased to £5 a week. —Referred to Finance Committee to report on these and on cases in which increases have not been made. Municipal Pictures staff asked for increases of pay. —Referred to Theatre Committee. Eltham Borough Council asked support for a resolution urging the *Government to prompt action regarfling the rapid influx of alien race immigrants into New Zealand Try framing a definite policy as to the nSnibcr, if any, to be admitted each year. —To be supported. Hawke’s Bay Hospital and Charitable Aid Board re conference’s resolution, detailed the steps no«v being taken to collect outstanding moneys.— Received. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee reported as follows: — Petition, sewer Gallion street. —That provided the applicants deposit the estimated cost between them, the sewer l>e extended as applied for, the deposit io be refunded to them whenever another loan for drainage purposes is i'Hjscd. Abattoirs. —That the following works be carried out to the abattoirs: Painting throughout interior, relaying floor of killing room, relaying concrete yard roar of building, repairing cattle race, repairing window frames in cooling room, repairs to timber work of killing room, repairing fences and other incidental wprk around yards, subdividing present cattle yard to make additional efittle pens, and that the Alayor and Or. AVhite endeavour to arrange with ;Alr. Warren, manager of the Tonioana works, for our killing to bo dontf at *Tomoana whilst the above works at the abattoirs are being carried out. — , Adopted. ■ ! GENERAL. ’ Cr. Fowjer moved: That the resolution of Sth'July adopting the No. 2 Committee’s report re the water supply for Havelock North be rescinded. — Lapsed for want of a seconder. Cr. Fowler moved: That fhe opinion of the Alunicipal Association’s solicitor (Air. Martin) be obtained as to whether a borough, councillor can legally purchase or lease borough property' without public tenders being ealed. Seconded by Cr. Hamilton and carried.
