RAILWAYMEN’S ACTION. TRIPLE ALLIANCE TO DECIDE. London, May 28The National Union of Railwavmen decided to submit the Irish railwaymen's claim not to move munitions to a full meeting of the Triple Alliance.— (A. and N/Z.) CORK’S COMPENSATION. ADDS 3/- TO RATES. London, May 28. The Cork Council is confronted with new compensation claims as a sequel to police murders and incendiarism, involving £207,000, which will add 3to the rates. The Ulster Unionist Council, at a special meeting under the presidency of Sir Edward Carson passed a resolution pressing for the non-partition oi Ulster.—("Times ”) AMERICA AND IRELAND. RECOGNITION OfTnDEPENDENCE REJECTED BY NARROW MARGIN. > Washington, May 27. The Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives rejected by ten to nine the resolution endorsing Irish independence.—(A. and N.Z.) INSULTS TO BRITISH -EMBASSY. IRISHWOMEN ROUTED BY AMERICANS. Irishwomen who were carrying banners with insulting legends near the British Embassy at Washington were attacked and put to rout by Miss Sof>hic Stanton, grand-daughter (5P Abra■am Lincoln’s Secretary of War, and her friend, Mrs- Hattie Arkin, of NewYork, who succeeded in destoying some of the banners, says the New York correspondent of the “Times.” These ladies were arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct, but were released on their providing bail of £5 each. Meanwhile it was'discovered that the banner-bearers could be proceeded against under an old statute which made it felony to insult the diplomaticrepresentative of a foreign Power. Accordingly the police arrested Miss Mollie Carrol, an actress lately appearing in “The Better ’Ole.” and Mrs. HenryWalker. of Astoria, Long Island. They were, however, released with a warning.
