BRITAIN’S TRADE.
OPTIMISTIC SURVEY. WONDERFUL RECOVERY. (Received 5, 9.55 a.m.) London, Jan. 3. Mr. Winston Churchill speaking at Sunderland, gave an _ optimistic survey of the country, which he said was bn the high road to recovery and quickly getting into stride. Manufactures were expanding, orders for home and abroad were steadily increasing and expenditure r7 "' aB rapidly decreasing.—(A. and N.Z.)
A TRAVELLING EXHIBITION
OF BRITISH MANUFACTURES. London, Jan. 2. The Secretary of the Department of Overseas Trade, in an interview, said that the Treasury had sanetioned expenditure on a scnenie under which a travelling exhibition of British manufactures would be held in the principal commercial centres of South Africa, Australasia, Canada, and possibly the Far East. This exhibition was designed to attract the Dominions’ buyers, with the minimum of expense and inconvenience to them. It will stay in each centre about six weeks. The tour will last two years. He also referred to the measures taken to develop British commerce amongst foreign nations, and said that the German Government, already realised the success of the British Industries Fair held last year, and had granted a substantial subsidy to fight it. —(A. and N.Z.) THE AMERICAN EXCHANGE. DOMINIONS TOSUPPLY FOODSTUFFS. London, Jan. 2. Interviewed in London, Sir Auckland Geddes said that English manufacturers were not disturbed by the position of the United States and English exchange. He says it devolves upon the United States to bolster up the exchange. Sir A. Geddes intimated that Britain’s future policy would be to purchase raw materials for manufacture from the United States, while she would secure foodstuffs from the British Dominions.— (A. and N.Z.)
