SPEN VALLEY ELECTION.

SIR JOHN SIMON DEFEATED.

London, Dec. 2. At the Spen Valley by-election Sir John Simon (liberal) was defeated. The polling was:— T. Myers (Labour) 11,962, Sir John Simon (Independent Liberal) 10,244. Fairfax (Coalition Liberal) 8134. —(A. and N.Z.) [At the general election in 1918 the election for this seat resulted: Sir Thomas Whittaker (Co. L.) 10,664. T. Myers (Lab.) 8,508. The seat was rendered vacant by the death if Sir Thos. Whittaker. Mr Asquith was suggested as a candidate for the seat but refused. At the 1908 General Election Sir John Simon, the sitting member, was defeated by L. S. Johnson (Co. U.) for the Walthamstow (East) seat.
