IN ROLE OF INJURED INNOCENCE EBERT’S NEW YEAR MESSAGE. Berlin, Jan. 2Suspense was relieved by the announcement that the Peace Treaty protocol was signed in Paris on Tuesday. There is deep gloom in Government circles because the Allies did not relent regarding the delivery of the Kaiser, officials and officers for triaL Herr Ebert (President) in a New Year’s message says:— Under the pressure of ruthless compnlsion we must conclude a peace threatening to place at the mercy of foreigners our honour, welfare and the fruits of past and future labour. Herr Ebert called upon Germans to close up their ranks and to do their utmost to reconstruct the Fatherland.—(A. and N.Z.)
