NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT. WON BY SMITH, PORT CLUB.

The final in the New Year bowling tournament was played on the Napier Club’s green on Saturday afternoon, between Turner (Napier Club) and Smith (Port Club). A large number of bowlers were present to watch the game, which proved very interesting from start to finish. Smith’s rink led off by scoring a total of four on the first three heads. On the fourth head Turner scored a six and went on piling up the score until he bad reached a total of fourteen. At this stage it looked like an easy thing for Turner, especially as he had got over the fatal number, 13. However, Smith’s rink, by persistent good play and doggedness, gradually wore down their opponents, who never added to their score, until the Port team had registered a total of 16. With only a few heads to go play became exciting, both sides doing their best to secure victory. On the 20th bead Smith was leading by one, and on the 21st head when the skips went down to play, Smith was lying two. The Port skip contented himself with leaving the head alone, whilst the Napier skip tried to shift “kitty’’ about two feet, which would have given him three and the game, but luck was against him. His first bowl ran a bit narrow, and his second fell short, the Port team thus winning by 23 to 20. The veteran skip Mr. 3. P. Smith, was heartily congratulated on his win, this beipg his second win in succession, having won the trophy last year. The game was splendidly contested throughout. ORDINARY GAMES.
