“FOUL” YARDS.
[to the editor.] Sir, —Your article on “Clean up your back-yards,” in to-night’s paper, is “right there” and to the point at the present time. It seems to me almost impossible for one Inspector to attend properly to the whole borough—it is too big an area. Fowl-yards, I honestly think, after some 30 years’ experience in New Zealand, are with a few exceptions, a fine breeding *place for. germs, fevers, and so-forth. My I neighbour is a very decent sort, but; his ducks and fowls smell vile at the i' back of my house. Now, no one likes making rows anl barneys, or j turnings informer, and so tolerates; this infernal stink coming over from next door, and says nothing. Generally speaking, it is your neighbour’s “better half” that keeps these fowls, and ducks too —not the hubby—and when* on| complains it makes a row and the “women folk” go off pop, and one is in hot water. The time is long past when in all towns and boroughs, if fowls and ducks are kept the floor ought to be compelled to be made of concrete, or cement, and washed down at least once a week and twice in the summer. Last summer in Hastings, during the very hot days, the stench from some fowd and duck runs was, to put it very mildly, very bad. I hog to noint out in conclusion that I think the Borough Council here should give fowl-yards’ sanitation their attention at the first opportunitv.—l am, etc., i KARAMU. Hastings 20/11/18.
