HASTINGS DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

HONOURS PANELS

In the windows of Roach’s Ltd. there are two very line panels made of New Zealand wood with the names of boys on them who have won distinctions in the District High School as students and also those who have enlisted for war service, the names of those who have made the great sacrifice being marked with an asterisk. The panels are simple and beautiful in design and worthy of the use to which they are to be j put. and the designer is deserving of congratulation. Both panels are I arresting in every way and compel | one to stop, read, mark, learn amlj inwardly digest. These then are the boys we are breeding and training in our midst, and in them lies the future, They stand the promise of splendid, intelligent manhood, intellectual and moral, and not least is the band, that in their youth “counted their life not dear” when a great cause demanded it. The town that can write these names has reason to bo proud with a great pride, and when the panels are fixed and unveiled the occasion ought to be a great, one. It should be a function when Hastings seeks to show itself at its best and honour itself by being present. Every one should take the trouble to see these two panels in their present setting, and it is hoped that Roach's will permit them to remain until all have seen them, and the <lpy they are fixed should see class represented in the dedication-

When the time comes for deciding upon memorials it is to be hoped that we. shall, in some prominent place, where men pass and re-pass eiery day, be able to place the names of our fine young manhood in' marble, or granite and gold, who gave so much for so great a cause, so that every man in passing can reverentially raise his hat as a mark of undying gratitud l . Ihe time has come for us to think hard upon the. things in life that count and are immortal.
