QUICK SHIP CONSTRUCTION JULY LAUNCHINGS. (Received 10, 9.30 a.m.) Washington, Aug. 9. It is officially announced that the July launchings in Amercan yards were :— No. Deadweight Tons. Steel ships .... 67 433,244 Wooden ships .. 53 187,000 Composite ships 3 11,000 Totals 123 633,244
In the same period 41 vessels of 235,052 deadweight tons were completed, whereof thirty-six were of 217,052 deadweight tons, and five wooden vessels of 18,000 deadweight tons. These launchings exceed the yearly pre-war output.—(A. and N.Z.) TRIBUTE TO LORD READING. (Received 10, 9.30 a.m.) New York, Aug. 9. _ The New York “Times,” in an editorial, emphasizes the splendid work done in ttie United States by Lord Reading (Sir Rufus Isaacs) and hopes that his visit to England will be but a brief interruption of his extraordinarily useful and valuable labour. Lord Reading has shown remarkable genius for the solution of business problems and was largely instrumental for the splendid success of the co-ordination' of British-American war efforts. —(A. and N.Z )
