The trial of Ecgars for the West (''■-T-t murder v. as continued todav.
Inspector Cruickshank, Greymouth. identified four cartridge shells and two bullets handed to him and detailed the work of the police after the tragedy. The injuries suffered by Coulthard and Hall were described by Dr. Usher, Medical Superintendent at Greymoiith Hospital, who said it would have been possible for Coulthard. after being shot, to get out of the car and walk a few steps. After Hall was shot in the forearm he might have been able to shoot, bur not with accuracy. John Pender, groom at Dunoolie, detailed a conversation he had had with accused about lost papers and other matters, while Joseph Garvey miner, Dunoolie, and Osmond Alcock, bootmaker, gave evidence as to accused's occupancy of the cottage in the vicinity of the tragedy, the first-named identifying the occupant as accused, though the latter could not.
Timothy Saunders, labourer, Grey mouth, who had known accused for fifteen months under the name of McMahon, said he had seen him going across. Cobden bridge on November 8, with his bicycle, and had drawn the attention of one McGuire to accused’s presence in the district.
The Court was adjourned till tomorrow.
TO-DAY’S PROCEEDINGS
Christchurch, Feb. 13. The West Coast murder trial was continued to-day.
Evidence was given by George Roberts, an employee of Kettle Bros., storekeepers, Greymouth, Thomas Maguire, labourer, Christian Nissen, hairdresser, Uraine Mundy, restaurant keeper, Archibald Arrol, Stewart Brewer, Alexander Brown (aged 10) and William O’Neill (13), all indentifying accused with incidents near the date of the crime.
The other witnesses this morning were Harold William Webb, hotel keeper. Greymouth, Arthur Percy Butt, iron moulder, and Anton Pal kenbach, manager of a motor garage at Hokitika. The evidence was chieflv of identification.
