H.B. COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tile newly-constructed Hawke’s Bav -County Council met yesterday. Present: The County Chairman (Mr T. E. Crosse). Crs 11. M. Campbell. E. C. Clarkson, Kinross White, T. Mason 1. Clark. H. A. Russell, G. A. Macdonald, W. Shrimpton and Guthrie Smith. . The following is a continuation of the business transacted :— The question of taking over unexpended loan money ov6r part of the Waikare riding was left in the hands o-f the Chairman and Cr. Smith. A letter was received from the Wairoa County Council, agreeing to administer the Waikare riding till March 31st., 1918. The Napier Harbour Board advised tihat it would take steps to prevent damage to the Taradale road by floods.
The Chairman and Cr. Mason Chambers were authorised to decide whether a concrete bridge should be erected over the Here Here stream at Havelock North. . The chairman and Cr. Kinross White were appointed delegates to the forthcoming conference in connection with the Waikaremoana scheme. Cr. White suggested that a toll gate should be erected on the Te Aute road, with a view to providing for the u-p-keep. Cr. Clark said he did not believe in tolls. A committee was set up to report to the council. Cr. Chambers said that if one toll was erected many would be required. The chairman was authorised to deal with special cases coming under ithe traction engine by-laws. I On the suggestion of Cr. Chambers the engineer was instructed to get i the corners of roads cut off when I same were being dedicated, thus giving a clear view. The council decided to accept no responsibility in connection with a motor accident which G. Davis had as the result of a road washout caused by the. flood. It was decided to take steps to acquire a road deviation through Pukekura .West block under the Public Works Act.
A letter from A. Tomlinson, asking that a new road near him should be called Pomeroyal road, was received. It was stated that the Council did not name its roads but had no objection. v On the motion of Ct. Chambers it was decided to obtain advice from the solicitors as tp the council’s liability in connection with Conway’s drain.
A letter was received from the Public Works Department, advising that £2OO had been granted for Gentle Annie. .The Public Works Department advised that the Westshore bridge would be completed at the end of January.—The chairman said the council had paid £20,000, and probably would not be able to make use of the bridge for 18 months or two years. This was owing to the Harbour Board’s failure to complete the embankment. Meanwhile the council would have the upkeep of the old bridge.—lt was decided to claim on the board lor loss sustained..
When the accounts, amounting to £6843 12/6, were passed for payment, the chairman remarked that they were the largest in the history o’f the council. In 1915 the debit balance was £12,500, in 1916 £15,000 and this year it was £21,300, hence councillors could see that there was necessity for economy-. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. Cr. Mason Chambers paid a tribute to the work done by Air Crosse and' moved that he be re-elected. . Cr. Macdonald, in seconding the motion, said Mr. Crosse was an able and strong man, and they could not dp better than retain him. Air. Crosse was unanimously reelected. Mr. Crosse acknowledged the compliment paid him.
