Redmond, in a letter recapitulating the gallant services of the Sixteenth Division, emphasises the need for immediate reinforcements. He adds: “It would be a thousand pities and almost a betrayal of the heroic dead if the Division which has brought so much honour to the Irish name ceased to be Irish. The officers and men confidently hope that all who love Ireland will unite, irrespective of creed and politics, to hasten to respond to the appeal on behalf of the division which hitherto has been awarded over 300 military honours.”

The appeal by Herr von Bethman Hollweg, the President of the Imperial Bank, and other leaders, for gold articles, says: This sacrifice is small compared with bloodshedding, therefore out with your superfluous gold ornaments from trunks and cupboards, and help the Imperial bank to fill with golden weapons Germany’s economic armoury. The report of the committee of enquiry into the shooting of Skeffington says: Apart from insanity, there is no excuse for the conduct of Capt. Colthurst. The report animadverts Colthurst’s failure to realise the elementary principle that the shooting of unarmed, unresisting civilians without trial is murder, whether martial law has been proclaimed or not.
