HASTINGS STREETS.
The bad state of some of the roads in Hastings was the subject of discussion at last night’s Borough Council meeting. . Cr. King set the ball rolling by saying the streets seemed to be graded np a very haphazard manner, and waffe f rightfully Cr. Clapham said many street* were -left wifnbiit rue-grader or plough. He presumed that the council must be short of men and teams to do the work. It would need a genius to find out what roads required attention. The Engineer said the trouble was the present teams engaged in carting could not be spared to attend to other streets requiring attention. The Deputy-Mayor said he recognised that something should be done to hit upon some plan where teams could bo released in oiMer to prosecute other necessary work. Some method should be devised whereby metal cou.d be speedilv deposited on the streets requiring it, but in his opinion the council would require to have twice the teams it now has. Cr. Adams jsaid work decided on by the council was not always carried out. When a resolution is passed by the council to prosecute certain work, that work ought to be done. If the engineer l.as not got sufficient teams or men to do the work, he should come to the council. Cr. Cook referred to the channel in Churchill street which was perfectly uneven. On the motion of Cr. Clapham, it was decided to refer the matter of the grading of streets to No. 1 Committee.
