AUSTRALIA. CONSCRIPTION DEBATE BY A LABOUR CONGRESS. Kalgoorlie, June 7. For the past two and a half days the State Labour Congress has discussed the question of conscription of manhood. The discussion was opened on a motion opposing conscription, to which an amendment was moved favouring conscription of eligible males between the ages of
18 and 58. The debate was brought to a close last night, when thefol- » lowing motion was carried: —“That, in the interests of the defence 01 Australia and the Empire, thia Congress desires to express its confidence in the Federal Government.” The view taken by the majority of delegates was that the Federal Government could be trusted to act in the best interests of the Empire. £70,000,000 WANTED (Received 15, 9.0 a.m.) Sydney, June 15. The Hon. W. G. Higgs, Federal Treasurer, has issued a circular appealing to the public, particularly to small investors, who are offered substantial inducements to participate to support the new war loan. He says the national expenditure for the year 1917 will amount to over £70,000,000, most whereof must be raised by loan.
NOTES FROM VARIOUS STATES The Western Australian Turf Club’s operations for the past year entailed a loss of £10,143, including the patriotic donation of £3OOO.
