Cr. Mason Chambers moved. — “That the minute be .rescinded by which tlie council, at its meeting on Alay 10th. 1915, resolved to legalise a road leading to the Okawa Station.” — The. chairman seconded the motion, which was carried. Cr. Orr moved. — “That the minute. be rescinded by which the council. at. its meeting on. Alay 10th, 1915, resolved to spend £.50 on .metalling on the Poraiti road.” In speaking to the motion. Cr. Orr said there was little traffic on the road, which was in good order. The riding already had a debit, of £2,100 against it. —(‘r AJason Chambers opposed the motion, and said owners of property there had sent let tors to the council regarding this road for the last 1.5 or 20 years. It was only fair that ratepayers of sucii long standing should receive consideration. Tlie chairman also opposed the motion, and said the withdrawal of this £5O would create a bad prc-ceclent. — T’ne motion was lost. . ~

Cr. Orr said the men working at the quarry on the Patoka road were, only doing five hours. He had watched them himself. They started at 9.30 a.m. and knocked off at 3.30 p.m. — lhe engineer said the men did start late and leave early, but they were nc.t so bad as the;, appeared on the surface. The camp was o long way off, bnt the shifting of that was being considered.- —Cr. Orr said the men were practically doing more harm than good tor want of organisation. The men also complained of the work done by the men with the traction engine, which, he said, did not stan't woric till 9 o'clock this morning.—The engineer said the mtn were working conscientiously and well, and he was perfectly satisfied with them. The chairman said the engineer was acquainted with the state of affairs in regard to' the private teams on the Patoka road, and the mill-owners had been, notified. —The engineer was iiisti tided to see that the private teams are properly supervised. The engineer submitted a report (puidished in our Saturday’s issue) in reg-ird to a proposed experiment in concrete road construction. —It. was decided to forward a copy of the report to t.he Minister of Public AVorks. with a request that assistance be given to carry out the work, at the same time pointing out that tliis is an expensive experiment ot 11 ativiia 1 importance. —The chairrnan said the material available i:t present was not suitable for the traffic which main roads were subjected to. -It was further decided to ask the Fantanuata Council to assist. Cr. Clark called attention to the necessitv of taxing motor lorries which were tearing tlie roads up.— The chairman explamc.l that bvlaws v ere now being ina-pared which proposed to deal with the mallee. Tenders for metalling at Havelock North were, left in the hands of the ihairman and Cr. Mason Chambers.
