WAIPAWA DEMONSTRATION.

[to the editor.]

Sir.- As a member of the V, aipawa Patriotic (’ommiltee let ire-. hasten to assure F. Johns rh"t ’1 < was absolutely no intention t *d _n’ the Hastings Salvation Amy >:-an<l last Wednesday. Tiu ir presence in Waipawa was altogoflur an unexpected pleasure and no member of the Patriotic Committee had the slightest idea they would be in o.ir town till tDcy arrived in two motor cars so;m time after the procession had started. The request that- they should play a selection in i.’.i? hall was. I believe, sent :i|> to the chairman r.fie.- the meeting was well ttn«L v. ay. and any one <-an s< •' that th- i- ,-ome difib nity in altering n. programme oil the spur of the moment. The patriotic me.-iing was crowded and enthusiastic. Lilt it. was decidedly long arid the atmospb.< re was hot ami sliiling. ami I think ?/■<• Deputy-Mayor was right in not lengthening tiie programme in anyway. In the matter of the Salvation Army captain not being on the platform, there was a vacant chair there all afternoon, ami 1 am sure it was the wish of the committee that Captain Huston should take his place there. Your correspondent would notice that none of the clergy took part in the meeting, but as tne Anglican, Presbyterian and Salvation Army had fine services in their own places of worship that evening. (I am sure they were well satisfied with the day's proceedings.—l am. I'"’’ WAJ PAWTAN.
