NAPIER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A committee meeting of the Napier Chamber »1' Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, Air.. is. McLernon (President) in the chair. The Wellington Chamber advised that the ninth congress ot Chambers of Commerce or the British Empire, to have been held at Toronto, had been postponed for one year. — Received.

The Prime Minister advised that the chamber’s representations regarding the Waiaxaremoana scenic reserve would receive consideration when the report of the Scenery Preservation Board came to Hand. —The chairman said the chamber should seek the support of other chambers until the Government took definite action to reserve the bush referred to. —Suggestion adopted, and Government to be asked for a positive assurance that the land will be obtained. The \Vaipawa County Council advised that they had asked the Minister ot Railways to take reasonable steps to minimise the danger from fire, caused by sparks from railway engines.—Particulars of damage required. The General Manager of Railways expressed the opinion that the Na-pier-Hastings railway service was very satisiactory.—Committee to drart a reply. Williams and Kettle, Ltd., complained of delay in the de.ivery of goods sent by rail, and suggested that small lots of goods could be put in. the- van, and thrown out where required.-—Committee to wait on tne Traffic Manager when he is in iNapier regarding the mattere. H.M. Trade Commissioner notified that an exhibition of certain goods manufactured in England was shortly to be held in London. He also drew attention to. the lists _of goods of British manufacture which appear from time to time in the Board of Trade Journal.—Copies of journal can be .seen at office of the Napier Chamber. It was decided to forward a letter to Mrs. J. Snodgrass, expressing sympathy with herself and family on the death of the former President of the chamber, Mr. J. Snodgrass. Mr. Ringland asked the chamber again to give consideration to the necessity for a new post office, at Napier, for which £lO,OOO had been placed on the estimates. He considered that the. present site was the most suitable one, and would accommodate a building many times larger. He mentioned this fact because some references had ben made to acquiring a new site. — It was decided to urge the Minister to proceed with the construction of the new building on the present site. Mr. Kohn drew attention to the fact that the Postal Department was asking holders of automatic stamping machines to deposit a sum equal to the average for a week’s postage as a guarantee of good faith. —The chairman said the use of these machines was, in a way, the Government giving credit. The. question was should the chamber ask the Government to give credit.—Mr. Williams said that unless there was a general feeling throughout the country Xhat the deposit should not be asked for it would be unwise for this chamber to take action.—Auckland and Wellington Chambers. to be asked for opinions. v A n account for 6/-. was passed for payment. -
