BOWLING

NEW ZEALAND BOWLING ASSOCIATION.

We are indebted to Mr. J. E. Hall, secretary of the Hastings Bowling Club, for a copy of the first annual report of the above association, and we herewith publish a few extracts which will be of interest to bowlers throughout Hawke’s Bay : —The bowlers of the Dominion are to be congratulated on the fact that the long talked-of ami much-discussed scheme of amalgamation is now an accomplished reality. Many fears were expressed as to the workability of the new scheme, but these have to a large extent, proved groundless and now that the first year of its existence is nearly over it is highly satisfactory to knotv that, the association rests on a secure ami solid foundation. It is due to the vencordial co operation and assistance

of bowlers throughout the Dominion that this very gratifying position has been attained.

The membership of the association consits of 17 centres, of which eight are in the North Island and nine hi the South, embracing 198 clubs and 10,912 members. In the East (.oast Centre there are 686 men playing bowls between Gisborne and Waipu kurau. made up as followsßluff Hall 40. Gisborne 130. Grcenmeadows 54, Hastings 103. Napier 97, Nga Toa 24, Port Ahuriri 30. Turan ganui 90, Waipawa 30. Wairoa 29. Waipukurau 44, Te Ran 15. Laws of the Game. —This has proved a much larger work than was an ticipated. The sub-x'ommittee, con sisting of Messrs. Barnett, Payne, and Allan, together with the execu five committee, have gone exhaustively into the subject, remodelling and redrafting the Laws in such a way as to make them clearer and thus ensure uniformity of interpretation throughout the Dominion. Tlie only drastic alteration was the clause dealing with “two feet on the mat.”

With regard to bowl testing, the “Green Test” was unanimously adopted. The first tournament under the auspices of the new association was held in Dunedin in January and proved a distinct success. A large entry was received, and bowlers from all parts of the Dominion wen pre sent. The standard of play was good, while the social element was an outstanding feature of the gathering. Old friendships were renewed and new friendships formed, and it is safe to predict that these assoeia tion tournaments are going to prove a big factor in welding together the large body of bowlers of which New Zealand can now boast. ■ The headquarters of the association for the ensuing year will be a Auckland.
