Before the Tariff Commission, a witness stated that his firm makes pianos in Sydney, but had to sell them as German instrmnnts. They did so at the request of customers, and in order to meet competition. They used the name plates of Ger man firms who had m> local agents. Sometimes the name or address was fictitious and the name cl' the.manufacturer eras spelt slight lx- incorre<-t--ly. If the buyer wanted an Austral ian made piano it’xvas sold as sur-li. and if they wanted a German pi mo lie called it German. He added that one or two other retailers did similarly. Even English pianos were imported bearing a German firm s name [dates. A renresentaUve (J a leading music house «‘tid that if th.e practice existed it was intinitesitii.il in its extent, because the maker’s agent would take immediate legal action to prevent it. Another witness quoted a case in which the name plate of a wellknown Australian maker was replaced by that on another instrument and sold for a bigger price.
