FATAL RUNAWAY. Christchurch, Feb. 16. At 5.30 p.m. on Saturday the dead body of a young man named George Londsay Roberts, aged ' 27, ' was found under a tip dray on the road nphr JBcargilL. Wanganui, Feb. 16. Extraordinary evidence was given at an inquest to-day touching the death of a roadman named Bert Jones, who was drowned in the riyer at Kaiwhaiki on. Tuesday last. Timothy Hogan stated that the deceased and he walked to the Upokungaro Hotel. They had four or five long beers and they took away' with them three'bottles of beer and one bottle, of whisfiy, some of which they drank on the Iway to camp. They reached the river about 4.45, and called for a canoe. A boy 'brought one across. Hogan refused to enter it, thinking the craft unsafe. Jones, however, -went in the cqnoe, -which he rocked .till it capWd. The boy swam ashore to get ttrtstsnie for Jones, but when he rfettwMd Jones had sunk. A police constable said he had made inquiries at the hotel and was satisfied that the men were sober when they left there. A hqlf-filled bottle of. whisky was found on the body. Hie police have been notified that Moses Hanrahan, a single man 77 years old, who lived at St. Bathans, fell over the face of the Sea ndinavia a claim (about 100 feet) yesterday afternoon, and was rendered unconscious as well as sustaining a broken leg and/ general bruises. His recovery is considered improbable.

BOY BATHER DROWNED.

Palmerston North, Feb. 16. A lad named Ernest King, formerly a telegraph messenger and latterly a letter carrier, was drowned While bathing in the Manawatu river this afternoon despite the efforts of his companions to save him. The body was recovered by the police.
