BOXING.
(Notes by "Counter.'’) It is regrettable that the Hawke’s Boxing Associat'on should have incurred a loss over the recent contest between Keys and Hannan, but the success of the fixture in all other respects will go far to remove any dissatisfaction that may have been occasioned by the comparative failure of tlie “gate” to which more than one factor contributed. It is evident now that an error of judgment was displayed in raising the tariff, which action, combined with
r.. - . 'lie vaec>Liatu>n craze, was responsible for the mm-attendanee of many cothusiasts. who. under the ordinary course of ('tents, would Have been present. The highly enjoyable natuie o; the contest was a tribute to the judgment of the association in selecting two such accomplished and well matched exponents of the •“noble art.” amt the next “affair.” arrayea under its auspices, will no doubt rective the same libera! support. which it has been accorded in tiie past.
At the gathering, after the stakes had been paid over. Air. Fraser's action in completely exonerating Bromwich Iroin any wrongdoing in his recent match with Hagerty, and the endorsement of same by Air. Sampson, the referee, met witli the approval of those present. Bromwich expressed liis thanks and appreciation of tlie kind consideration extended to him by the association and trusted that he would be given another opportunity of showing what he was really capable of. Keys left Hastings for Auckland on Friday to keep his engagement with Johonme Summers, the English lightweight champion, which is to be decided early in August. Summers, who is already on the spot, came across from Sydney in company with Boyo Briseoll. the English crack featherweight, who has been laid up for some months with rheumatism and who is bound for Rotorua in the hope that the famed waters there will be instrumental in effecting a cure. A Sydney writer says that Summers is to receive £l5O, win or lose, and expenses, which is surely the record sum so far tendered a professional boxer in Afaoriland. The Northern Boxing Association can scarcely be said to be working in the best interests of the sport by catering too lavishly for professional .ugilists, says a southern sporting writer.
Dave Smith’s second victory over Les O Donnell, whom he knocked out in sixteen rounds, will be gratifying to New Zealand boxing enthusiasts, in view of the fact that he is practically our. only representative who figures among the front rankers in the game at present. There is talk of his being matched with Pat Bradley, the Irish welterweight, the conqueror of Jim Sullivan, who held the English middleweight championship for some time, at the Sydney Stadium a fortnight ago. Such a match would create widespread interest owing to the high reputation Bradley has established since his arrival in Australia.
