WAIRARAPA v. HAWKE’S BAY. (special to “the tribune.”]
Featherston, July 24. | Hawke’s Bay met Wairarapa at : Featherston this afternoon and were i defeated by three goals to two. The I Hawke’s Bay team were very much i off colour owing to the long tedious I journey and having to break the ! trip at Woodville. We left this place at 5 p.m. to-day. The ground was i very heavy and the Hawke’s Bay boys were very much off in the mud. The fast attacks of the Hawke’s Bay forwards were conspicuous by their absence, owing undoubtedly 'to the state of the field, players finding it great difficulty in keeping their feet. The game was slightly in favour of Hawke’s Bay, but their erratic shooting am] lack of combination lost them the game. The Wairarapa men appeared quite at home mid played a hard hitting game. Hawke’s Bay opened up by attacking from tai' bully off, but M'airarapa backs quickly returned, and through a misunderstanding by the Hawke’s Bay backs, the Wairarapa. centre netted a good goal within omin. from starting. Hawke’s Bay continued to attack, but Wairarapa came again with a fine passing rush, and notched their second goal. Skipper Aladdison changed Jones from bully to right wing, and Atkinson took his place in centre. The change was effective, and Hawke’s Bay drove home a good attack. Jones notching’ Hawke’s Bay’s first goal from a pass from Atkinson. The first >p('ll ended : AVairarapa 2. Hawke’s Bay 1.
Plat- was up and down the field for a long time in the second half, Y r ates relieving in fine style until Wairarapa scored from what appeared to be a clear off-side. Wairarapa 3, Hawke’s Bay 1. Hawke’s Bay now livened up, Jones coming into left inside and Anderson taking his place on the wing. Our boys mace many attempts to find the net, but the ground was palpably beating them. However. Blundell centred from a good rush and Atkinson shot a beautiful goal. Front the bully-off. Hawke's Bay came again, and Atkinson from a penalty corner hit the post and tlie hall glanced outside the net. The whistle sounded with Hawke's Bay attacking. The team, although defeated, are confident after their experience today, that they will put up a good fight for the shield. On a fine ground Hawke’s Bay would have won to-dav.
