MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

HASTINGS. (Before Mr .S E. McCarthy. S.M.) THIS DAY. INSOBRIETY. John Greenwood, charged with being drunk on June 2nd and 3rd, was convicted and fined £3 with 2costs or seven days on the second charge, and on the first charge he was convicted and discharged. A first offender was convicted and fined 20 - with 2- costs or -IS hours’ imprisonment. AFFILIATION CASES. Roy McLennan, charged on remand with failing to pay £l5 incidental to the birth anti burial of an illegitimate child of which he was alleged to be the father, was represented by Mr. E. J. W. Hallett. On the application of Mr. Banks, who appeared for the complainant, the case was adjourned till June 13th. Accused was admitted to bail in Lis own recognisances of £BO. Andrew Bergersen, charged with failing to make provision for maintenance of his illegitimate child, pleaded guiity. and wa- ordered to pay 7 6 per week from June 4th and £2 2'- solicitor’s fee. Henry Moss, charged with being the parent of one Alexander Ogden, a child under ten years of age, he did fail to provide such child with adequate maintenance, was ordered to pay 5 - per week from to-day’s date.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Elizabeth Wilson, charged with attempting to commit suicide by taking Jeyes' fluid, was represented by Mr. Norton Thompson (Kennedy. Lusk, and Morling), and pleaded guilty. Sergeant Hogan stated that on 23rd May accused’s husband left home at midday and had not since returned. The woman was left penniless with five children, including an infant, and in a fit of despondency. drank some Jeves’ fluid.

Mr. Thompson said that on the 23rd May accused’s husband left home as usual and as later she heard he was not going to return, she wrote to him. Receiving no reply she went to see him at the Borough Council Chambers on the following day. Wilson ran away when he saw his wife and had not been home since. The wife on returning home sent one of her children to a store for some lyso!. but was sent Jeye’s fluid instead. She drank a spoonful of this, but immediately realised what she had done, and sent for a doctor. She was not in a serious condition and had recovered in a few hours. The parties had been married seven years and had lived reasonably happy till recently. Accused made allegations of drunkenness and infidelity against her husband and was upset when she drank the fluid. She was very sorry for what she had done and asked for the leniency of the Court. Mr. E. J. W. Hallett said he was acting for the husband and other proceedings would follow as the result of misconduct alleged against

accused. Convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called hpon. COMPULSORY TRAINING. Harry Tricklebank, charged with failing to render personal service as required by the Defence Act, was fined 40 - with 7"- costs. Robert McLellan, similarly charged. was mulcted in a like penalty. His Worship severely rebuked defendant for discourtesy in answer to a question, and told him that his defiance ou parades would be. dearly paid for/if persisted in. BROKEN PROHIBITION ORDER. John Alexander Slater, charged with procuring liquor whilst prohibited. was represented by Mr. G. E. Lee who pleaded guilty. Accused was fined 40 - with 7/- costs or in default seven days’. BOROUGH BY-LAWS. •John Beat son, charged with riding a bicycle after sunset without a light, was convicted and fined 20 - with 7 - costs. Ernest McDermott. Frank Mest. A. L. Crawford. Alfred Best and James Thomas, for similar offences were treated in a like manner. Herbert Charles Downes, charged with riding a bicycle on a footpath was fined 20 - with 7 - costs. Henry Hugh Dysart, was similarly penalised for a like offence. His Worship again drew attention to the dangers arising from breaches of these by-laws and said his opinion was that the defendants had set themselves out to defy the law.
