BACKWARD LN THE SOUTH. Dunedin, Dec. 2. The wool season in Otago is said to be backward. It is not good for the sheep to have its heavy coat taken off in the middle of a cold snap, and most of the spring has been snappy. The quality of the wool is expected to be good and the output, it is anticipated, will be satisfactory. Christchurch and Timaru have already held their first sales, but the amount of wool forwarded was small. Dunedin will hold a sale about the middle ol December, when the quantity for sale will probably be smaller than usual. Invercargill, which ordinarily has its first sale a day or two after Dunedin, will in all likelihood abandon it this year ow ing to the scarcity of wool forthcoming.- The second Christchurch sale is expected to be heavy,-as shearing is in full swing in the Arnuri and North Canterbury county, and prices for this useful product are expected to atone for any possible lack of weight consequent on the season.
