Jennings Mitchell won the toss and Faulk ncr and Tant-red faced the Fouling of Minnett and Whitty The South Africans made a disappointing start, Faulkner playing on after scoi mg 5. One for 21. Whitty’s bowling was excellent and Minnett was bowling his fastest.

Stricker with two fourers hoisted the century after 130 minutes’ play. The breeze was helping the swing of both bowlers. The batsmen were hitting vigorously. Minnett replaced Hazlitt at 127. Fifty-one runs were added in 30 minutes after lunch. , Matthews relieved Whitty at 135 and Taylor with a four on the onside off Minnett hoisted the 150 after 155 minutes play. Kelleway replaced Minnett at 165 and captured Stricker’s -wicket. The batsman played a dashing innings and hit nine fours. He batted for 68 minutes, but gave a chance at 16. The partnership added y 7. Taylor was then 45. Six for 171 Taylor reached 52 after being 100 minutes at the wickets, and received an ovation.

Whitty replaced Matthews at 183. The second century was hoisted after 200 minutes’ play. Mitchell’s middle stump was knocked down by Whitty. Seven for 203.

Taylor continued to score well, but Schwarz failed to score. Eight for 213

Taylor and Pegler were then associated and a good stand was made for the ninth wicket.

Hazlitt replaced Kelleway at 212. Pegler hit two fourers in the same over and was then finely taken by Bardsley running from short-leg. Pegler hit five fours and batted for 25 minutes. Faulkner relieved Schwarz at 65 and Pegler relieved Nourse. Kelleway was ironically applauded as he played each ball for his extreme caution He had batted for too minutes when stumps were drawn, and gave a chance at 24.
