TRAMWAY ACCOUNTS.
In his lecture on “Tramway Ac counts” delivered before the Hawke’s Bay ' and Napier Accountant Students’ Societies at Hasting! j last Friday, Mr. John S. Barton. F.1.A., N.Z., who is director of C. M. Banks, Ltd., Commercial College, and lecturer in accountancy at Victoria College, Wellington, took as a basis for the lecture the Wellington City Corporation tramway accounts. By way of preliminary remarks tb< lecturer dwelt on the ner cssi'y < 1 proper accounts and the advantages to be derived from a go >d system o! j accountancy. He then dealt in de ' tail with the following special ac counts: Revenue account, net re- ; venue account, depreciation and re- ; newals fund account, sinking fund account, appropriation account, and finally the balance sheet, examining and criticising each in detail. Mr Burton incidentally mentioned that it lay in the power of those present by an intelligent study of .accounts to play no small part in con nection with the electric tramway system which at present is being inaugurated in Napier. They could as expert accountants, point out t the burg-esses any defects there might be in the scheme adopt cd and suggest remedies whereby ' losses might be obviated and profit? increased. ■ At the conclusion of Mr Barton’ remarks, Mr. W. McCulloch, on be half of both societies, thanked the visitor for lecture which had been most interesting and instructive. Mr. McCulloch also emphasis rd the point made by Mr Bartor that accounts properly and fully set out were invaluable.
