HASTINGS SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The usual monthly meeting of the Hastings District High Schqpl Com mittee was held last evening. Pre sent: Messrs. G. Land (chairman) T. J. Davidson, R. Trotter, J. A Miller; A. Leipst. G. Musson, T. Styles and T. H. Stewart. Leave of absence was granted tr Mr. C. Hawkes. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The Headmaster (Mr. L. F. Pegler reported as follows on the workinj of the school for the four weeks end cd Friday, July I2th : — Roll number at date of last report 839 ; admitted since date of last re port, 18; withdrawn since date o' last report, 18; present roll, 839 average daily attendance, 711. The attendance has been very low there being an average of nearly I3< absent each half-day. This is due partly to an epidemic of mumps, al though several very wet days have added their influence. Examination.-r-Mr. J. A. Smith the board’s junior inspector, con ducted the annual examination o the school during the week June 24t) to 28th. His report will be to ham after consideration by the board a* its next meeting. Social.--Arrangements for thannual social, to be held on I ridaj in next week, arc well in hand. I is hoped that parents and others in terested will give as. full a measun of support as on former occasions. General. —A sub-branch of th< Navy League has been formed a the school, mainly by St. VI. boys As a consequence the school s suppl) of wall maps has been augmcntci by a handsome Navy League Map which is especially useful in the up per standards. Stationery fees amounting to £l3 1- (including £i [ 1,8 on hand from April), have beei : collected during the quarter ending July 31st, and a cheque for that sun has been paid into the committee’; account.

Mr. Pegler explained that 12 boy; were necessary to form a sub-hrancl of the Navy League. The subserip tion was I,- each per annum, fo which they got ample return in th' way of badges,- and books, in addi tion to which they were entitled t< inspect visiting warships free o! charge. The formation of a sub branch also entitled the school to : comprehensive map of the work showing the British possessions, etc This had been received and was r valuable asset to the school.—A mo tion was passed approving of the for mation of the sub-branch, anc thanking the league for the map. The report Was adopted. GENERAL. It was decided to Lave the school grounds tarred and sanded durini the holidays.

The chairman and headmaster were authorised to purchase the necessary window blinds. The Education Board wrote stating that the headmaster had been written to enquiring the number of extra desks required.—Mr. Pegler said he had made aplication for 16 desks. Accounts amounting to £29 /3 3 were passed for payment. Messrs. Styles and Stewart were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month.
