WAIPAWA CONTEST PRELIMINARIES. At the rooms of the Napier Amateur Boxing Association on Monday evening, Lou O’Halloran of Waipawa, in view of the forthcoming light-weight contest at Waipawa between himself and 'ben Porter. Hastings, for a purse of £35. indulged in a trial bout of fifteen rounds with several distinct boxers. The first bout was one of six rounds with Frank England, middleweight. This was a fairly even go although the latter was a little out of condition, but it served to aceuunt for the difference in weight and the rounds were fought out cn almost equal terms. Cummings next entered the ring ami fought two rounds with. O’Halloran. The former not possessing sufficient experience to slop the quick and heavy lefts and rights of his opponent, was severely minis!ted. The next bout v. as one of two rounds with Joe Andeison which furnished an interesting display. O’Hallman thereupon feught two rounds with H. Birth, a 'feather-weight. This was an item of much interest from the point of view of pace, ruth sent in a great many loads which he could not connect. L. O’Halloran proved too quick and cleicr m his defence work to allow his opponent to get his blows home. 11. O’Halloran next fought a round with his brother which proved the best, the fastest and most vigorous go of the evening. For th? two concluding rounds another brother, A. O’Halloran, enter-< cd within the ropes and a further swift and bard fight ensued. Lou O’Halloran at the conclusion c! the bouts had still plenty to spare and seemed in excellent condition. ' The large gathering of spectators thoroughly apprecinted the evening’s; display. 1
Porter, who meets Lou O’Halloran at Waipawa, is undergoing hard training at Hastings, and with both contestants in such excellent condition a hard fight might to be witnessed. It appears unlikely that cither man will be knocked out and the full number of rounds arc confidently expected to be lought.
