THE TITANIC DISASTER.
LORD MERSEY'S OPINION. London, June 30. Sir Rufus Isaacs argued that the Titanic did not desire to make a record ,but if her speed had been reduced to eight knots she might have collided but would not have been sunk. There were only 40 seconds between sighting the ice and the impact. It was idle to suggest that the accident was of a kind that must occur.
Lord Mersey incidentally said he was inclined to think that the whole disaster was due to excessive speed.
