NAVLA VISIT.
H.M.S. ENCOUNTER AT THE BREAKWATER.
The arrival of the Encounter in port yesterday caused considerable interest. Some little delay was caused on arrival by the s.s. Tarawera also coming into port, and the passenger boat was courteously allowed to get into berth first. People thrpnged the wharf to watch the \tarship come alongside, and great eagerness was displayed as to when she would be open for inspection. It is understood that the public may visit the boat to-morrow from E3O to 5 p.m. Some of the school boys were allowed on this afternoon at 2 o’clock. The officers of the vessel are as follows: —Captain S. G. Hickley ; Commander T. B. Stevenson ; lieutenants Clutterbuck, Hurst, Hunt, Grubb, Mortimer, and Clover; Captain Billing. R.M.L.I. ; Engineercommander Crabtree; Engineer-lieu-tenant Weeks; Fleet-paymaster Wardroper ; Assistant-pax master Lane; Staff-surgeons Miln and Whitman ; chaplain, Rev. Peshall. Amongst the early visitors were members of the Navy League, Messrs. R. D. D. McLean, J. R. Crerar, A. S. M. Polson, and R. v. Canon Tuke. AN OFFICIAL VISIT.
This morning at 10.30 the Mayor paid an official visit to the vessel. He was accompanied by Mr. Murray, Town Clerk, and Mr. J. P. Kenny, secretary of the Harbour Board. Mr. A. E. Jull. chairman of the Harbour Board, wired that he was unable to be present. The party were met at the gangway by Captain Rickling and shown over the ship after the usual exchange of courtesies.* It is understood that a return courtesy visit will be paid by Capt. Hiekling at 10.30 on Monday* morning.
