FIRES.
A FIREMAN ELECTROCUTED. Wellington. April 14 Shortly after five o’clock tbn morning a fire ai tended with fa’-al consequence-; broke out in a carpen tor’s shop in Eller’s lane, off Willis street. While the fire brigade were i;< work on the fire a ladder came ir contact with a high tension electric wire. The third officer. W. R. Me Lean, who has ascended the ladder, caught hold of the iron -.voik am wis instantly elect’ ocuted. Medical was "ccured at once, but lhe doc tors could only say that death had i,e n irstan t an c ous. The carpenter’s shop was occupied by. Henry Manning, who had ar insurance of B-109 on the contents in the commercial I nion office. The building was the property of Messrs. Dalziell and Grace, and was insured with the iaun Company. A covered stairway communicating with a room in the Manners street carried the f.r.c to a thrcc-storied building, which was badly damaged by fire and wat"r. The second ilooi of the Maim-.-rs street building wa: a billiard room occupied bv Ricnaru Alexander, the first floor by the Sanitm-ium Health Food Compant and G. P. Hanna, sign writer, ant: the giottnd floor by Miss Cooper, florist. Walling, tobacconist. ant Fred Journey, basketwnre manufacturer. The ground am! first floor; were damaged by water only. A STORE BURNT RIGHT OUT. Wellington, April 1-1. A fire broke out at 2.43 this morning in a general store occupied by Mr. Samuel Cope, at Moxham avenue, Haitaitai. The building with the contents was burnt right out. The contents were insured for £lOBO. The building was owned by Mr. Moorehousc. The fire alarm rang out in Napier at about on Saturday evening, the cause being some smoke issuing from the smokehouse at the back o. Messrs. Conway and Co.’s premises in Hastings street. Some observant person who noticed this gave the alarm. The brigada speedily turned out and a large crowd collected but the excitement disappeared when it became known that the smoke was being utilised to cure “saveloys.”
