The fire alarm rang out in Napier at about on Saturday evening, the cause being some smoke issuing from the smokehouse at the back o. Messrs. Conway and Co.’s premises in Hastings street. Some observant person who noticed this gave the alarm. The brigada speedily turned out and a large crowd collected but the excitement disappeared when it became known that the smoke was being utilised to cure “saveloys.”
