MEETING OF SENATE. DEGREE EXAMINATIONS AND OTHER MATTERS. Wellington, April 13. The University Senate met on Saturday to consider the results f the recent degree examinations an I other matters. There were present: —Sir Robert Stout (Chancellor), Professor J. W. Brown, Professor J. AV. Tibbs, Professor J. R. Brown, Professor Hight, Mr. G. Hogbcn, the Hon. D. Collins, Professor R. J. Scott and Mr. L. Cohen. The Senate decided that an Exhibition Science Scholarship be awarded to Theodore Rigg, of Victoria College, and it was decided to ask the commissioners to award a scholarship to Percy William Burbridge also. Reports were received from Messrs H. A. Thomson and F. L. Peck outlining a scheme for a conservatorium music. It was decided to forward copies of the reports to the Auckland University College. The provision that candidates p or the degrees of B.A. and L.L.B. must have passed in Latin as for martrtculation was interpreted to mean that the conditions only applied to tho: e condidates who had passed the matriculation examination subsequent to the examination of 1910. A bachelor of medicine of Glasgow University was accepted as a student having kept one year’s terms for the degree of bachelor of arts. It was decided that candidates who had not completed their engineering preliminary examination might do -o at the end of their first academic year. Marks in history for the entrance scholarship, which were fixed at 600 at the recent annual meeting of the Senate, were reduced to 575 for this year only. Books in history for the B.A. examination for 1913 were prescribed as follows:—Swift’s “Conduct of f he Allies” and “Free Thoughts of the Present State of Affairs.” Steel’s “Crisis.” Bolingbrook’s “State of Parties at the Accession of Georg" I. Hume’s “Essays” (Routledge’s Universal Library edition). Part 1.. Nos. IL, IX.. XII. ; part 11.. Nos. VII.. XII., XVI., and “Additional Essays,” No. 111. The following examiners were appointed—Latin (for matriculation): Professor Dettmann. Zoology (for matriculation): Professor H. B. Kirk. History (for entrance scholarship) : Professor Hight. Bookkeeping (for agriculture): A. T. Clarke. A.C.A. Veterinary surgery (for agriculture): C. J. Rcakcs, M.R.C.V.S. The Hahcns Prize was not award cd. no candidate's essay being up :■■ the standard. It was decided that the amend a 1 courses in history for B.A. and Senior Scholarship should come into force in 1913. The following degrees were conferred Bachelor of engineering (electrical), on W’llinm Leonard Par ker; 8.A.. on Agnes Gertrude Stonehaven Merton.
