ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report and balancesheet to be submitted to the Annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association this (Wednesday) evening is as follows : — Your management committee have much pleasure in submitting their 6th annual report. The season 1911 was a very prosperous one for the association, and although the funds of the association are not as flourishing as your committee would like, when we take into consideration the large expenditure involved in the upkeep of grounds, and in sending two teams on tour, the state of affairs cannot be considered unsatisfactory. There was a considerable increase in the number of teams and in players in nearly all competitions, and the public interest in the sport was very gratifying. The usual competitions were held and resulted as follows :— Ladies’ Senior (Graham Cup) Undecided. Ladies’ Juniors. Wapiti. Ladies’ Wednesday (Lane Cup) Kia Oja.

Men’s Sat. Senior A (Byatt Banner)

Mercantile. Men’s Sat. Senior B. St. Matthews. Men’s Sat. Junior. Kohinoor.

Men’s Wed. Senior (Roslyn Cup)

Albion. Men’s Wednesday Junior. Oriental. The Saturday challenge banner was again retained by the Hastings Club, and the Wednesday banner by the Albion Club.

The Maroro Cup* was won byClive. Tournament.--The annual tournament was held on the sth of June at Cornwall Park. Notwithstanding that the weather was unfavourable, the tournament was a great success. Results :—Men’s Senior A,' Albion ; Men’s Senior B, St. • Matthews; Ladies’ Juniors, Ngatiawa; Ladies’ Senior, Clive ; Men’s Junior, Drapers.

Kaiapoi Cup.—Hastings Rept. were again successful in defending this cup. Challenges vzere received from Napier, Dannevirke ,and Waipawa, but the latter failed to support their challenge. Representative Matches. — The Hawke’s Bay Men’s Representatives travelled to Wellington to play 7 for the Challenge Shield and were again unsuccessful, being beaten by Wellington b,v 3 to 2, after a game that was admitted by 7 all competent to judge that Hawke’s Bay should have won.

■ The Hawke’s Bay ladies travelled to Wellington to take part in the Ladies’ championship tournament, and after going through the whole of their sectional matches without a defeat were beaten in. the final byNelson by 2 goals to 1. Hawke’s Bay has held the championship ever since its inception in 1908. A men’s representative team journeyed to Gisborne and defeated Poverty Bay by 3 to 2. Arrangements were also made to send a team to Wairarapa, but this trip had tc be abandoned at the last moment as several of the players selected were unable to make the trip, and their places could not be filled. 1 Your committee desire to express their thanks to the Umpire’s Association for the valuable assistance in controlling games. It is worthy of note that after a long struggle the New Zealand Hockey Association has at length adopted the view of the Umpire’s Association are also to be congratulated on the firm stand they have taken against rough play and misconduct of play 7 ers generally, and this is a matter in which ypiir committee have . done their best to support the umpires.

The thanks of the association are also due to all those who contribute towards the general funds of the association, and also to those Who assisted in financing the ladies team to Wellington. Finances.—The committee found it again necessary to make a levy on all players. It is pleasing to note that it is solely at the expense of hockey players that the game is kept going in Hawke’s Bay.

For the coining season we have io make provision for sending teams on tour, the ladies to Auckland where the championship will be held, and the men will in all probability have another try for the shield. Visits are also due to the Wairarapa and Nelson Associations. In view of this, it is for the annual general meeting to consider the advisability of raising the annual affiliation fees. The committee has decided that ar> amendment to the playing rules in the direction of having proper registration forms is desirable. It is for the annual general meeting to confirm this alteration.

Your committee would suggest to clubs the desirability of arranging matches between clubs in the various portions of the district with a view to increasing the friendly spirit between. the various districts.

The matter of a schools competition is also a thing which should be gone into. The balance-sheet shows that the year commenced with a debit balance of 9/6 and ended with a credit balance of £7/5/6.

NOTICES OF MOTION.

The following notices of motion will be considered at the meeting:— That rule 19 be amended as follows: The words “one member be appointed by the Referees’ Association” and “the hon. treasurer” be deleted. That the Referees’ Association be allowed a delegate tc the annual general meeting.
