WAIPAWA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
(Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting was held on April 2nd. Present: His Worship the Mayor (W. I. Limbrick), Crs. McGreevy, Pellow, Bloor, Ross, H. M. Rathbone. CORRESPONDENCE.
From the Secretary for Education forwarding library subsidy of £& 6 B.—Received.
W. Young donating files of magazines and w’eekly papers extending over a period of 20 years to the Library. —Vote of thanks accorded. Westport Coal Company notifying rise of 1.6 per ton in the price ot coal for gasworks. —Received, and the action of the Mayor endorsed in ordering 50 tons before the rise takes effect.
Waipukurau Orchestral Society asked for loan of bass violin vested in the council.—To be informed that as the instrument was vested in the Council as trustees for the Waipawa Band the council regrets having no power to grant the application. L. Pratley asked the council to extend the sewer to allow of his house being connected.—Estimate to be prepared for a 6in. main.
W. Peters asked that the water tables in Bibby and Bennett streets be cleaned out. —Referred to Overseer.
Christchurch City Council asked the council’s support in securing legislation to extend councillors' term of office from two to three years.—Received.—Councillors were of opinion that its only recommendation was a reduction in the cost of the elections, otherwise two years was long enough.
A. Gilmour, forwarding specifications for footpath and kerbing.—The original proposal was f<..r a Ain. kerbing, but now that a 6in. is suggested. His Worship doubts whether there was sufficient money in hand to allow for the extra cost. After discussion it was decided that the councillors go over the ground with Mr. Gilmour and determine what to do, and whether to let it by day work or by contract. The overseer reported that the extra pipes in connection with the duplication water works plant were laid to the reservoir and that he anticipated the power house to be completed in a week. On Mr. Gilmour’s suggestion it was decided to store the red gravel taken from the Church street excavations for future requirements. It was resolved to defray the cost of repairs to the bicycles of the peri manent employees of the borough. His Worship advised that the I borough employees were now getting 19, - per day on the resolution of a previous meeting.
A vote of the ratepaj'ers will be taken on Saturday, the 13th irst., on the proposed loan for theatre improvements.
The overseer and Cr. McGreevy were empowered to purchase an additional draught horse for the borough work. His Worship proposes reviewing the borough finances at the next meeting of the council. Accounts as follows were passed for payment : —General, £209/1/-; pumping plant loan, £231/7/5 ; roads and streets improvement, £6B'4 10; gas works loan. £l2 18 1; drainage. £2 4 - ; total. £523 IS 4. MAYOR’S SERVICES APPRECIATED. After the ordinary business of the Borough Council, Cr. Ross proposed and Cr. H. M. Rathbone seconded that as the Mayor’s term of office was drawing to an end, he be granted the same honorariam as last year, namely. £6O. The proposer expressed the council’s appreciation of the Major's services and all hoped to him back again.
