TWENTY-SEVENTH CONVENTION. Dunedin, March 13. The twenty-seventh convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was inaugurated to-day, when the delegates were officially welcomed. Mr. Burnett (Mayor) extended a civic welcome, and speeches were also delivered by Mr. G. M. Thomson, M.P., the Rev. E. Davies (president of the Council of Churches), Mr. A. S. Adams (president of the Temperance Reform Council), Mr. G. Watson, Mr. W. J. Moore, Mr. D. Gain, and Mrs. Don. The speeches were acknowledged by Mrs. Cole. A thanksgiving service was held in the evening. POLITICS AND SPORT. .Dunedin, March 14. In the course of her presidential address, Mrs Cole (Christchurch) made special reference to the leading questions of the time. They had to recognise the present political position made it almost impossible for them to expect much at tention to be paid their demands or that provision would be made L>r suggested reforms. The Sports Protection I.eague’s ideals were sub jected to some very caustic criticism. It had under its harmless pseudonym their real intentions. They claimed that they existed for the protection of sport, but in spite of all protestation the cloven hoof appeared and the remarks of a member of the Christchurch branch of the league confirmed the union’s belief that the league was organised for a definite political purpose, viz., the support of the totalisator. The league should be called the Totalisator Protection League. The address was exceeding well received.
