Alessrs. Ronayne and Beattie, of the Railway Department, give an unqualified denial to the published statement that thev intend to retire. Air. and Airs. H. Guthrie Smith, who have been spending a few days in Napier, returned to Tutira this morning.
Air. G. W. Russell. ALP. for Christchurch, who has been on a visit to his station at Runanga, arrived in Napier by the Taupo coach this morning.
Sir Arthur Guinness, who is at present in Christchurch, stated today, in reply to a question, that he would accept nomination to the Speakership.
The r< mains of Air. Justice Cohen, of N.S.W., were laid in the grave to-day. He was buried in the Necropolis at S.vdney. A big cortege followed his remains.
Sir A. ami Lady Guincss arrived .at Christchurch from Greymouth on Wednesday. They leave L.vttoltoii for Wellington bv the fern steamer to-night.

Mr. G. Crawshaw, secretary of the Education Board, who is now in Wellington on departmental business, will probably return to Napier on Monday evening.
Captain A. M. Brodie, M.R.C.V.S. (of Hastings) left for Dannevirke this afternoon, where he acts as veterinary officer at the Oringi artillery camp.
Mr. Arthur Wade, Grand President of the North Island Lodge of the Ancient Order of Druids, left by the mail train this morning for Marton to preside over a conference of delegates from the various branches.
Mr. John C. Clarke and family left Hastings by the mail train yesterday morning for Auckland, where Mr. Clarke has been appointed assistant engineer in the Public Works Department. Mr. Tom Pickett, Postmaster at Tauranga. accompanied by Mrs Pickett, are visiting their son at Hastings. Mr Pickett is on holiday leave prior to removing to Thames, to the charge of which postal district he has been transferred.
Mr. E. R. Brabazon, who has relieving Mr. Dixon in Wellington, is expected to return to Napier on Monday evening and resume his duties a« Collector of Customs here. Mr. A. Dunean, acting-collector, will leave some time* next week for Wellington.
Mr. S. E. McCarthy, S.M., who has been at Port Awanui in connection with the appeal case there concerning the validity of no-hcense carried by the Maori population in that district, will return to Napier by the boat on Monday morning. The mortal remains of the late Mrs. Margaret Hamilton Parker were laid to rest in the Hastings cemetery to-day. Rev. P. Ramsay officiated at the graveside. The body was to have been taken to Wairoa for interment, but owing to the departure of the boat being delayed as the result of the bad bar. this course had to be abandoned.
Mr. T. Fahey, assistant clerk -at the Hastings Courthouse, lias received notice of his transfer to Gisborne. He will be succeeded at Hastings by Mr. D. L. Walton, of Paeroa. During liis two years' stay in Hast- *
ings, Mr. Fahey, bv his courteous and obliging maimer, has made himself very popular among those with whom his official duties hate brought him in contact, and who. whilst congratulating him on his promotion. will regret his departure. Mr. Fahey was an enthusiastic member of the Athletic Football and Cricket <’lul>s. and his presence in Rugby circles will lie greatly missed.
