The Napier Harbour Board will meet at W.30 on Tuesday to discuss the Wharf Labourers’ agreement. The old Post Office building in Queen Street. Hastings, is being converted into shops and offices.
The election expenses of Mr. H. Hill, the Labour candidate for Napier city, have been returned as £73 9 -. '
Yesterday morning a female lunatic from the Napier Hospital was taken to Porirua in the charge of Constable and Mrs. O Brien. For the fourth consecutive day tbls week there was a "clean sheet. ’ at the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning.
The Rev. G. W. J. Spence. President of the Methodist Conference, will conduct the service m Wesley Ci>ai<’h. Hastings, to-morrow evening. It is to be hoped that all members of the Lawn Tennis Association will arrange to be present at this evenmg'' meeting at Napi'r. as tlm business .for discussion is important for the provincial clubs. The special meeting of the Napier Boroegh Uormcil which was to have been held this morning has been postponed until Alondav at 9.30 a.m. The question to be.discussed is the advisability of raising a loan for payment of tb.e overdraft existing on Macch 3lst ; 1910.
The following additional donations have been received by Air. C. Douglas. secretary of the A. and P. Society, for the purchase of the new showground at Tcmoana : —R. Wellwood I’s. S. Miller £5. T. S. Percival £5, M. Bridgman. J. C. Watts £5, J, TL Colebourno £2/2,-. The total sum is now £2462.
The work of the organiser on behalf of the National Provident Fund in the South Island during the last few months has produced excellent results and the evidence the Department It a 5 received shows that the publ'c are beginning to realise the benefits of-the Fchenie. The propaganda work that has been dona in the South Island is about to be extended to the North Island. the sympathetic attitude of the employers in the south has been very gratifying and encouraging to the Department. In some cases employers have voluntarily offered facilities to the department's representative at. the cost of their own time.

At a general meeting of shareholders in the Hastings Starr-Bow-kett Building Society held last evening. a sale of £5OO in No. 1 Issue realised £l4 per £lOO, ami a ballot for £5OO in No. 2 Issue resulted in favour of group No. 102. Mr. M. Johnson presided. The Havelock North districtschool held its annual picnic in Mr. Toll’s paddock. Needless to say, few children were absent, and the good things provided disappeared like magic. The afternoon was spent in races and games.
In connection with the* camp which is to be held at Oringi, all the guns ■Acre sent down last night and the horses this morning. An advance party, including the cooks and or derlies left Napier yesterday. The F Batter.', which is going into camp, consists of about 80 men, and they _m\e a parade at the Napier Rail way 'Station at 1.30 to-day. Thev left by special train for Oringi at. 2.15. Every man will be in uniform.
Heavy rain set in at Hastings shortly after 8 o’clock last night, and continued at a steady downpour till an early hour this morning. To-day the country wore a fresh appearance, and to the farming community in particular, the visitation was exceedingly welcome. Owing to the parched state of the pastures and the ‘ liortness of feed for stock, the position was assuming a serious aspect. At a meeting at Timaru last evening representing all classes of sport, over 100 wore present. After hearing Mr. Paape, organising secretary it was. resolved to ferm a branch cf the Sports Protection League. Mr. Paape stated that the meeting was the most enthusiastic he has had so far. Through a previous canvass the Timaru membership is already over 4()0. Mr. G. S. Cray was elected prescient. and Mr. D. 11. Fraser secrctarv.
Last Sunday night the. Salvation Army Hall was well filled. "Ihe Life-Story of Mrs. Sansom" being the attraction. The audience was thoroughly interested, as the speaker passed from one stage of her experience to another. During the service several company songs were wmll rendered by a number of vocalists. To-morrow’s subjects are: ‘‘SelfEffacement," by Airs. Sansom, at 11 a.m. : music and song, a lively hour at 3 p.m. : in the evening at 7 o’clock il-c subject by Adjutant Sansopi is "A Sower went forth to Sow.” Special solos to suit the subject will be rendered.
It is a surprising fact that in spite of the hot weather there is not a br ; sk demand for fruit in Auckland. Nectarines arc offered for sale at fiowi 2! co 3D for one shilling, and vet they are difficult to sell. Plums have glutted th" inaikct and aie being offered at as low a price as 41b for (Id. Beaches are being offered at the same rate as nectarines, but the demand is not strong. Apples avc purchasable at 5- a case, and good tomatoes were yesterday being offei ed at 3d per lb., but an improvement in price is expected for these.
When the Union Company's new steamer Tahiti was several nights out from San Francisco on her recent trip therefrom to \\ ellington, wireless communication was established with the shore stations, but as soort as it was found that the vessel speaking was the Tahiti, San Franciscio appeared to close down, and no- message could be sent through. The Tahiti could hear the shore/ stations talking to other vessels, but they would close up at once when the Union vessel gave her name. It is supposed that the reason is that the Tahiti is equipped w : !h a ATnreoni instrument:, and consequently tin* United Wireless Company’s station refused to take her messages."
An extraordinary occurrence took place at tlie Coonamble baths o r > January 25. The basin was being implied, and the seven-year-old sen of the caretaker, A. Faulkner, fell in near the discharge pipe. He was sucked into the pipe feet first, and carried in the pipe, which has a diameter of only 9.lim, to the river, a distance of 20yds, and was plumped into the water-hole in a senseless condition. A townsman. J. Fleming, happened to be passing at the time, and bad his attention drawn to the boy by the barking of a dog. He quickly removed the boy to the doctor. Some hours elapsed before the lad recovered consciousness. Young Faulkner had a number of abrasions on his body, caused by contact with the pipe.
