ELECTION EXPENSES.
Two of the candidates for the Hawke’s Bay seat at the recent Par liamentary elections have torwarde I x a return of their election expense;; * to the Returning Officer (Mr. Robert Brathwaite). Mr. H. M. Campbell s expenses at the first ballot amounted to £lBB'6 3 anti at the second ballot £3‘2. Mr. Eustace Lane’s expenditure totalled £196 1-. The other candidates have not yet sent in . their returns. Section 173 of the Legislature Act. 1908. provides that within seventy days after the dav on which the result of any election is declared .every candidate shall transmit to the Returning Officer a true account of all payments made l>y him ami every candidate who fails to forward such return within the time prescribed is liable to a fine not exceeding twenty pounds. The Returning Officer shall keep ’’ such account in his office or a’t some other convenient place to lie appointed by the Minister of Internal Affairs for a period of twelve months after it has been received, and during that period such account shall be open to inspection by anj' person on payment of a fee of shilling : at the expiration of such period the Returning Officer shall cause the said account to be destroy - ed. The total expenses of a candidate in the first ballot shall in no ease exceed the so of £2OO. In secund the limit of expense is fixeu at £so.

The election expenses of Mr. J. Vigor Brown, the successful candidate for the Napier seat has been returned at f'l22 7 6.
