OVERLAND CYCLING.
BIRTLES’ JOURNEY. TIRED GF LONG JOURNEYS. Alelbourne, Jan. 29. Birtles arrived in -Melbourne at 20 minutes past 3 yesterday afternoon, covering 2509 miles in 26 days 5/ hours, beating his previous record by live days. He was delayed by strong heat winds between Adelaide and Melbourne; one mishap occurred between Narraccorfce and Kingston. When riding along the railway embankment he fell and slighily sprained his ankle, but was able to continue the journey. After a meal and a wash at Alelbotirnc, Birtles left for Sydney al 5 o’clock in the afternoon. He states that ho will undertake no more trans-eontincntal rides ; he had trav oiled around Australia for six years, and had covered over 60,060 miles. I; was time for him to give it up. The strain of Jong rides told on his nerves. The cyclist expects to roach Sydney on Wednesday morning : when be will have covered 3000 miles in 30 davs.
