RAILWAY WAREHOUSE BURNED.

The railway warehouse at Dantzig filled with sugar, wool and saltpetre. Was burned. The damage is estimated at £lOO,OOO. RESIDENCES AT AVELLINGTON. Wellington, Jan. 12. A fire broke out this afternoon in Bidwell street, and a ten roomed house owned an occupied by Mr. Herbert G. Smith, manager of the Phoenix Insurance Office, and an adjoining nine-roomed residence owned and occupied by Miss Mary Ballingall, were destroyed. The origin of the fire is a mystery. There was no wind, but a poor pressure of water. Mr. Smith’s house was valued at £lOOO and the contents at £BOO. while Miss .Baliingwall’s was valued at £l2OO, and the contents at £5OO. SCHOOL AT TE AWAMI'TU. Auckland, Jan. 12. The constable at Te Awamutu has reported to headquarters that the Harapepe public school was destroyed by fire yesterday. He is proceeding to the scene to make inquiries. ASLEEP IN A BERNING TENT. NARROJV ESCAPE OF TWO BOYS. Christchurch, Jan. 12 Two lads named Phillip and Harold Compton, living in Albert street, Linwood, were somewhat severely burned owing to the tent in which they were ’sleeping catching fire. It appears that early yesterday morning the elder lad, Philip, was awakened by smoke, and found the tent and matting ablaze. He awoke the younger lad, and they both rushed outside, but they were unable to escape before they had sustained bad. injuries. They were both admitted to the hospital, where their injuries were attended to. Philip is progressing favourably. The younger lad is the more badly burned, having sustained injuries to his body, as well as to his face and hands. The older lad was burnt about the face, hands and foot.
