SPASMODIC CHARITY.

HOPELESSLY INADEQUATE

(Received 30, 9.35 a.m.) London, Dec. 29.

Mr. Lloyd George, st a religious conference at Cardiff, said the spasmodic appeal for charity was a hopelessly inadequate remedy for the social problem. They might as well try to run an army’ and navy by’ voluntary subscriptions. There was more poverty to-day than ever, yet there was a sufficiency’ of wealth to make provision for it. They could not touch any evil in the country without finding interests flourishing thereon. It was the duty of the churches to compel the rulers of the country to realise then- responsibilities in the matter.
