Mr. G. Spencer Clapltam is expected to return from Wairoa this evening. Inspector Dwyer is at present tn Dunedin on a fortnight's leave. will be back some time next week. Bishop Grimes. Roman Catholic Archbishop of Christ church, arrived in Napier last evening to assist at the opening of the new scholasticatc at Merivale, Meanee, to-day.

Mr. J. A. Smith, assistant-inspec-tor of Schools, is at present supervising the University examinations at the Hastings District High School.

We regret to record the death of Mr. Patrick Herlihy. of Pr.kahu. which took place at Nurse Nairn’s private hospital, Hastings, yesterday. Deceased had been’ ailing for some time and was in his 52nd year. The funeral will leave the Hastings Catholic Church to-morrow at 4 p.m. The death occurred at Nurse Jcfferd’s private hospital yesterday of Aibert William Bell (Bert.) Poppel-

v f.ll. second son cf Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Pcppelwell, of Hastings. The deceased, who had only entered on his 18th year, had been an inmate of the hospital for the past few weeks suffering from appendicitis. Several operations were necessitated, and at fiist no serious co.-jsequences were anticipated. Some days ago, however, matters assumed a serious aspect, and despite the efforts of the best medical skill, the young lad passed' awa>- at 3.55 last evening. Deceased was latterly employed at Messrs, de Pelichet and McLeod’s' office, Hastings, mid was very pc-pu-lat with his associates. He was veil known in hockey circles, ani was an enthusiastic member and captain cf Ihe Hastings B. Club. Mr. and Mrs. Poppelwell and family will kaie the sincere sympathy of a very wide circle of friends in their bereavement. The funeral will take place to-morrow, leaving the CathoTle Church at 2.30.
