EAST COAST RAILWAY.
THE PROTEST FROM HASTINGS. In reply to the resolutions telegraphed to Wellington yesterday protesting against the proposed route of the Hawke's Bay Railway, Mr. G. Spencer Clapham received the following telegram this morning from Mr. Alfred Dillon: —“Received your joipt wire which I showed to the Minister for Public Works, who promises the matter shall have full consideration.” Air. Clapham subsequently telegraphed to Mr. Dillon thanking him for his prompt action. “MTLL HAVE DUE CONSIDERATION.” The Minster for Public Works (Hon. R. McKenzie) replies to Mr. H. A. Mossman as follows: —“I am in receipt of telegram of this datesigned by yourself, Air. C'lapham and Air: White with reference to the East Coast Railway route which will have due consideration.” Air. Alossman telegraphed thanking the Alinistcr for promising to give the matter his consideration. PETITION OPEN FOR SIGNATURE. Hastings residents who desire tcsign the petition asking the Gov.-m--ment to investigate all possible routes for East Coast Railway will have the opportunity of doing so this ex ening. Arrangements have been made to have copies of the petition at the Carlton Club Hotel coiner, the railway crossing and at Messrs Laud and Heighwav's cor. tier.
The following telegram has been received by Mr. C. Douglas, secretary of the Napier Chamber of Commerce, from the Hon. R. McKenzie -■'Felt very complimented on receipt of the wire forwarding resolution c-f your chamber xvith respect '<) the East Coast R-ailxvay. Please convey my thanks for same.”
